The Human Milk Bank in Bulgaria was established in 1989. It is located in Sofia and is financed by Sofia Municipality. The Bank consists of: Department for collection, storage and distribution of donated breast milk; Department of pasteurisation; Laboratory of Microbiology; Laboratory of Biochemistry. Donor breastmilk is provided for:
- health establishments – free of charge;
- infants with diseases, premature infants, babies with cow’s milk allergy, and those whose mothers have diseases and contraindications to breastfeed – free of charge.
- healthy infants raised at home – for a fee.
