Since the first milk bank in Spain was opened in 2001 at Palma de Mallorca, fithteen new Human Milk Banks have started its activities. From these 16 milk banks, 7 are located in Neonatal Intensive Care Units, 6 in Regional Blood and Tissue Banks and 3 follow a mixed model. In 2008 the First National Meeting of Spanish Milks Banks took place in Palma de Mallorca and the Spanish Association of Human Milk Banks (AEBLH) was created
